Snowboarders ride high on Rev Tour

Steamboat Springs snowboarder Spencer Vaughan flies high at a Revolution Tour event earlier this season. He had the best season of his career on the tour, results that included a third-place finish in a slopestyle event.

Two of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club's top young snowboarders recorded big seasons on the U.S. Revolution Tour this winter, a big stage that's proven to be a launching pad to the next level of their careers for many successful riders.

Spencer Vaughan, competing in slopestyle, and Savanna Atkins, riding half-pipe, posted stellar seasons on the four-event circuit.

For Vaughan, the pinnacle came March 4 at a Rev Tour event in Winter Park. Coach Al Grogan said Vaughan's "technical rail maneuvers and smooth style over the jumps" made the difference as he posted the first podium finish of his career. He qualified first at the event, then went on to finish third.

Vaughan was also strong at an event March 17 and 18 in Seven Springs, Pennsylvania. There, he qualified fifth and finished seventh.

Atkins, meanwhile, finished fourth in two separate events. The first came in January at a Rev Tour stop in Mammoth Mountain, California. Her half-pipe run scored in at 83.75, and she finished fourth after making the finals in the event for the first time in her career.

In this month's Seven Springs event, she was fourth again, laying down a solid run on an extremely foggy venue. She scored in at 80.00.

"Both Spencer and Savanna had amazing results and have come so far from the previous year," Grogan said.

Both riders earned spots on the World Rookie Tour this year in Austria.

"They both head to (United States of America Snowboard Association) Nationals knowing what they need to do to make the podium," Grogan said. "Those riders won't be any different from the ones they've already faced."
