Steamboat girls tennis falls short in semis
March 12, 2016
Steamboat Springs — The early portion of the season continues to be a puzzle for the Steamboat Springs High School girls’ tennis team, but it’s a puzzle that’s beginning to come together.
"We need more matches; we need more practice time,” SSHS coach John Aragon said. “We need to work on things at home."
The Sailors wrapped up their weekend at a two-day tournament in Grand Junction with a pair of semifinal losses Saturday. Maddie Thompson finished third overall at No. 2 singles after winning her third-place match, 6-3, over a player from Palmer Ridge.
Steamboat’s No. 1 doubles team of Sabina Berend and Sydney Boyd lost 6-4, 7-5 to a duo from Grand Junction in the semifinals before losing 8-4 in their third-place match.
“We were in that match,” Aragon said of the doubles team’s semifinal loss. “A couple of shots either way would have made a difference. But I was pleased with how we competed. We just had to close out a couple of balls."
Overall, Aragon considered the weekend a step in the right direction. The Sailors are still adding to their roster, as numerous players have had other obligations the first two weekends of the young season. Steamboat next competes in a match Tuesday at Evergreen, where it should have a nearly complete roster for the first time.

Aragon is still in the process of determining final positions for a few players.
“We need to work a little bit harder on placement of serves, closing the net on volleys and just more practice,” Aragon said. “The one thing I was really pleased with our girls was they fought for everything. Winning or losing, they have a great attitude, and that's going to help us down the road."
