SSHS tennis beats Evergreen
April 6, 2016
Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs High School girls’ tennis team defeated host Evergreen 4-3 Wednesday, a make-up match that had originally been scheduled for March 15.
While the Sailors won the match, it did come at a cost — the loss of No. 1 singles player Maddie Labor. Labor, who was winning the third set, injured either her hamstring or knee and was forced to leave the match. She will see a doctor Thursday to determine the severity of the injury.
No. 2 singles player Maddie Thompson cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory, while No. 3 singles player Lily Fox fell 6-3, 6-3.
“Maddie Thompson just played a real solid match,” SSHS coach John Aragon said. “She didn't give that girl much breathing room. From start to finish, she dominated the match."
The Sailors went 3-1 in doubles matches. The No. 1 duo of Sydney Boyd and Sabina Berend won in two sets, while the No. 2 duo of Surina Techarukpong and Anna Allsberry fell in two sets.
Aragon was especially proud of the No. 3 (Natalie Simon, Jordyn Hetrick) and No. 4 (Fena Metzler, Amanda Walker) doubles teams, as it was their wins that made the difference in the match.
