End-of-season events and closures

Will Cheesebro spreads wide Sunday in the Steamboat Ski Area's pond skim competition. He finished second. The event was canceled last year due to a lack of snow but will be back this year as part of the ski area's Springalicious events.

"The only way to close out a spectacular season is with a huge Springalicious event," said Rob Perlman, president and chief operating officer for the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation, in a news release. "This is our chance to say ‘thank you’ to all the locals, guests and staff who helped make this winter one for the books."

In celebration of the 2015-2016 season, the Steamboat Ski Area will kick off Springalicious festivities at 11 a.m. Saturday with the 36th Cardboard Classic, rounding up amateur and professional cardboard craft engineers in a race down the mountain.

After the race, at 3:30 p.m., the triple Grammy-award winning, multi-ethnic band Ozomatli will take the Steamboat Stage in Gondola Square with its funky, rock, rip-hop and reggae-infused tunes.

Returning after a brief hiatus last year due to the lack of snow, the Eighth Splashdown Pond Skim will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday, luring costumed skiers and riders brave enough to skim across an icy pool at the base of the ski area. Registration for both the Cardboard Classic and the Splashdown Pond Skim is still open, with a fee of $10.

At 3:30 p.m. Sunday, the Colorado "slamgrass" pioneers, Leftover Salmon, will close out the Bud Light Rocks the Boat Free Concert Series at the Steamboat Stage in Gondola Square.

The ski area will close lifts early Sunday. Morningside will close at 2:30 p.m.; Burgess Creek, Elkhead, Four Points, South Peak, Storm Peak Express, Sundown Express, Sunshine Express and Thunderhead Express will all close at 3 p.m.; and Bashor, Christie Peak Express and the Gondola will close at 3:30 p.m.

According to a news release from the ski area, even though the season ends Sunday, crews will be on the mountain the following day, April 11, plowing roads, storing winter equipment and beginning work on several projects. The release also stated that accessing the mountain after closing day is strongly discouraged, as heavy equipment, construction, road closures and hazards will exist and may be encountered without warning.
