15 club skiers bound for nationals

— It may take more than a van for the the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Nordic team to travel to the USSA Cross Country Junior Nationals event next month in Wisconsin.

The club qualified 15 young skiers to the event, more than a quarter of Colorado's 44-skier team headed to compete in the races, set for March 7 through 12 in Cable, Wisconsin.

At the top of the list are nine U18 boys and girls skiers. Jordi Floyd, Kathleen O'Connell and Anna Burkholder made it on the girls side. Evan Barbier, Simon Zink, Finn O'Connell, Tyler Terranova, Noel Keeffe and Wyatt Gebhardt all were in on the boys side.

At the U16 girls level, Waverly Gebhardt and Avery Harrington will compete, and Maggie Morton is in as an alternate for the team. Sven Tate, Jimmy Colfer and John Faster were all on the boys team.

Making the team followed a very strong weekend of racing for those and many other Steamboat skiers at a two-day event in Minturn put on by Vail Ski and Snowboard Club.

Racers skied in interval start Classic skiing races Saturday, then returned for mass start skate skiing races on Sunday.

A day later, when Gebhardt won again, he led a Steamboat sweep as Simon Zink was second, and Tyler Terranova took third.
