Laura Schrettner Corriveau: Issues divide Hayden
August 20, 2015
As a resident of Hayden, I am sorely disappointed in the citizens of my town. As the debate rages on (marijuana manufacturing), finger pointing, accusations of lack of Christianity, war on the town officials and many other negative ideas can be heard all across town. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. You are not entitled to judge and belittle others.
As this issue divides the town, we are missing the other important things all around us.
As Christians, we are taught to look at ourselves first (remove the log from our own eye before we try to remove the spec from someone else's). Stop looking at others through a filter of politics and emotion. Remove them from your view, then you can start seeing the real picture.
What is going to affect our children is the way they see the adults around them behaving. If we want to impact our children's lives, we need to be sure they have their basic needs met. There are children here whose only meal is the free breakfast/lunch supplied by Totally Kids or the school.
Become a mentor through Partners (a group that is always in need of adult volunteers in Hayden), offer to help in a classroom, lead a softball team, read with a child who does not have that opportunity at home. What do you want your child to remember from their childhood — his parents attending meetings to overthrow the town council or that someone helped him to learn, grow, play, explore.
Let's not miss this opportunity right in front of us. Whether you are for or against marijuana manufacturing, deal with the issue like a Christian adult. This has the power to bring us together as a town, solving real problems that affect our town every day, and the more heated issues that come up will be resolved much more easily.
