Bob Burks: Reconsider rates

I wish to add to the letter in the Pilot from Patti and Tom Zehner appearing April 6.

I have skied Steamboat for 40 years, the last 28 years as a full-time resident, and yearly as a Steamboat pass holder. My wife has been a pass holder for 20 years. I think we have contributed to the wealth of the ski area. In past years we skied 80 to 100 days but fewer days each year as we age.

We have paid the going rate all these years, have hired Steamboat’s excellent ski instructors, used the mountain restaurants and have tried to be respectable users of the mountain. I was a guide for Over-The-Hill Gang in past times. Now, at an advancing age, I hope to get a few more runs in before the mountain closes on me. But I feel the Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. wants the mountain closed on me now.

Reasonable price increases are expected and acknowledged. However, a 20 percent price increase for seniors while younger folk are asked for 5 percent doesn’t seem right. Does Ski Corp. really appreciate the contributions aging skiers have made? Are we still welcome?

Thanks for the good years.
