YVEA warns members about phone scam
May 18, 2016
Yampa Valley Electric Association is warning members about a telephone scam.
According to a news release from Tammi Strickland, YVEA communications and PR manager, members have been receiving phone calls from someone claiming to work for Xcel and needing to collect payment to avoid a disruption in service.
YVEA assures members they will never receive a phone call from YVEA asking for payment to avoid disruption of service. Members will, however, receive a courtesy call if they have a past due balance.
Those who call in to make a payment will be routed to the association's automated secure system and will be required to verify account information. Members may also come into the YVEA offices and pay at the kiosk or pay online with SmarHub.
YVEA advises members who receive calls of this nature from any company asking for payment — and especially for credit card information — to request a phone number and offer to call back.
