Yampa Valley Choral Society to perform spring concert Saturday and Sunday

David Hamaker directs the Yampa Valley Choral Society at a dress rehearsal Tuesday afternoon in light of the upcoming concert, "A Grand Night for Singing" happening this Saturday and Sunday at the Steamboat Springs High School Auditorium.

— Jovial voices raised in harmony echoed through the Steamboat Springs High School auditorium Tuesday afternoon.

A full chorus of the Steamboat Chamber Singers, Yampa Valley Singers and the Lincoln Avenue Men's Chorus spanned the full stage at the combined Yampa Valley Choral Society's dress rehearsal for the upcoming concert, "A Grand Night for Singing."

With ballads encompassing classical and popular hit songs, the concert, which will be performed at 7 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday, will celebrate spring.

"Music can be uplifting and bring back memories for people," said Yampa Valley Singers administrative coordinator Ruth McClelland. "It stimulates emotion within you. But it's also a time for the community to gather, enjoy a great night, to sit back and relax."

McClelland said song variety ranges from the Academy Award-winning song, "Over the Rainbow," composed for the 1993 film, "The Wizard of Oz;" the popular Beatles song, "Can't Buy Me Love" written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney; and even a 16th century Spanish love poem "Amor de Mi Alma."

Singing won't be the only form of entertainment showcased during the concert, said Jessica Pickett, one of the Yampa Valley Singers’ sopranos.

Steamboat Symphony Orchestra guest artists, Teresa Steffen Greenlee, Holly Fielding, Mary Anne Fairlie and Bruce Dean, will be accompanying the singers on a few of the songs, and there is a theatrical surprise planned during the song "Masquerade" by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

"It's impressive to see all of these different talents coming together in one place," Pickett said. "Everyone has their own style, and it's been fun to see what they bring and add to the overall performance."

Tickets are available from Yampa Valley Choral Society members and from All That, 601 Lincoln Ave.
