Wrestlers compete at world match
October 26, 2005
Steamboat Springs wrestlers Nick Rossman, Colton Mahanna and A.J. Carmack represented the Yampa Valley Wrestling Club at the Gladiator World Championships in Orem, Utah, last weekend.
After spending two days attending an intense wrestling seminar with former Olympian and NCAA All-American Ken Chertow, Rossman placed third in the 65-pound bracket for children 10 and younger. Mahanna placed fourth in the 90-pound bracket for children 12 and younger.
An additional highlight of the trip was the opportunity to meet Rulon Gardner, an Olympic gold and bronze medalist in Greco Roman wrestling.
The Gladiator World Champ–ionships, which fielded competitors from almost the entire western half of the United States, including Hawaii, is the first national-level tournament for Rossman and Mahanna this fall.
It is part of the Rocky Moun–tain Nationals Tourna–ment Series that includes upcoming tournaments at the National Western Stock Show Complex and Pepsi Center in Denver. The series ends at the Terminator World Championships on April 15 at the Seagate Center in Toledo, Ohio.
Board member Thaine Mah–anna said the Yampa Valley Wrestling Club was formed as a way to help talented local wrestlers be competitive with other regional clubs such as those in Meeker, Rifle and Craig.
