STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The 2018 Royal Court has been chosen for Winter Carnival. Of course, all three young women are full of the qualities needed to even be nominated by coaches — superior sportsmanship, commitment to academics, good moral character — so the big question … what are they going to wear?

"Oh my gosh, hopefully the most sparkly tiara I can find," laughed Winter Carnival Queen Maggie Morton when prompted about what she'll wear on the red carpet, oops, we mean "white carpet."

When Morton's court attendants were asked about fashion preferences for their royal duties this year, reporters gasped when sophomore Emily Craig and junior Margaret Dickson mentioned jeans.

"Maybe jeans, I don't know what are we supposed to wear?" asked Dickson.

Fashion and joviality aside, the queen and her attendants were said they deeply honored to be chosen as this year's Winter Carnival royalty.

"It means so much to me because there's been so much put into this club and so many people have come through here," Morton said. "My family and I have put a lot into this organization, and it's just really special."

The Steamboat Springs High School senior, who's been with the club since she was 5, started off as a Nordic combined athlete and is now focused on Nordic cross country.

All three ladies said the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club has helped shaped them into the young adults they'll become.

"It's not just teaching skiing. It teaches you to be a good person, how to manage time … it’s these other things you need in life," said Dickson, who is on the Alpine ski team and attends Steamboat Mountain School.

"I think it taught me a lot of life's lessons," agreed Steamboat High School sophomore Emily Craig, also an Alpine skier. "It teaches you motivation, competition and determination, but in healthy ways."

Royalty nominees must be nominated by coaches under strict guidelines, then the actual winners are drawn out of a hat.

But fate couldn't have chosen a more adequate representative than Morton, who appears witty, sociable and kind to her peers. She's served as an intern coach, helping to lead conditioning sessions for junior athletes. But most importantly, everyone around her feels like they fit in according to her coach.

"She's a little bit involved in just about everything in town," said coach Greta Anderson. "She's a catalyst for socializing. She knows what's going on in all disciplines at all times, whether its ties through the Nordic team or something at school."

Morton and her court will be part of the Feb. 7 Opening Ceremonies, which also honors the grand marshals and little princesses. They'll also be presented during the Night Extravaganza Feb. 10 where Morton said her biggest fan will be waiting.

"My mom is ecstatic,” Morton said. “She told every person she could possibly think of. She's going to take so many pictures and they're gonna be all over Facebook. She's going to have a ball with it."

Morton's mom better take photos while she can since her daughter will likely miss the Diamond Hitch Parade because of a ski competition in Vail.

No worries says her attendants Dickson and Craig. The two were practicing their princess waves in the Howelsen Hill Lodge.

"I'm just really excited. It's going to be a fun opportunity," Craig said.

While Craig and Dickson will continue their Alpine skiing through high school, Morton is looking toward college.

"I've been accepted into St. Michael's over in Vermont, and I have a spot on their team to ski for them," Morton said. "That is most likely what I am doing, but I have not completely committed to the school quite yet.”
