Steamboat Springs — A winter storm pummeling the Front Range is having an indirect impact on Steamboat.

Unfortunately, Steamboat isn’t getting much of the snow being dumped to the east. However, the blizzard conditions in the Denver area have prompted the cancellation of hundreds of flights at Denver International Airport, including the four flights between Steamboat and Yampa Valley Regional Airport.

Janet Fischer, director of airline programs at Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp., reported that about 300 passengers were scheduled to arrive in the Yampa Valley and another 200 were to fly to Denver on United flights today. Fischer said most of the inbound passengers likely won’t even make it to Denver.

The daily flights from Dallas and Houston also are expected to incur minor delays due to weather. The Salt Lake, Chicago and Minneapolis flights all were expected to be on time as of 11 a.m.

A wide winter storm pushing up from the south is expected to dump a foot or more of snow along the Front Range and Eastern Plains, and steady winds of 25 to 30 mph are creating whiteout and blizzard conditions. Interstate 70 has been closed between Denver and the Kansas border. Hundreds of schools have been closed.

Things are much calmer in Routt County. The temperature at 11 a.m. was 12 degrees with light snow falling with little wind. The National Weather Service is expecting Steamboat to receive 1 to 2 inches of snow this afternoon and another 1 to 2 inches overnight.
