Vail skiers shine at U14 Alpine championships in Steamboat

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Vail skiers dominated the podium through the weekend in the Rocky/Central U14 Championships, though a handful of Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club results stood out as the event wrapped up with a slalom race Sunday at Howelsen Hill in Steamboat Springs.

On the boys side, Vail's Sebastian Kohlhofer won one of two slalom events on Sunday. In that event, Vail's Nick Kirwood was second and Buck Hill, Minnesota's Zachary Bion third.

Bion won the second slalom event with Kohlhofer second and Vail's Toby Scarpella third.

For the girls, Liv Moritz led a Vail sweep, winning the first slalom run. Kjersti Moritz was second and Tianna Bruce third as Vail claimed the top five spots and seven of the top 10.

The result was largely the same in the second slalom race with Vail again taking the top five spots. The only difference was Bruce slid up to first place with Liv Moritz second and Kjersti Moritz third.

Spencer Richeda led Steamboat skiers, placing fifth in the first slalom race. Jonah Fleischer was 16th, Colin Kagan 19th, Jeremy Nolting 20th, Alex Orozco 23rd, Brooks Overstake 40th, Erik Sandvik 54th, Luke Olson 58th and Charles Welch 63rd.

In the second race, Kagan was 21st, Orozco 24th, Nolting 31st, Welch 42nd, Sandvik and Overstake tied at 55th and Richeda 71st.

Caroline Gilchrist was 17th on the girls side and Annika Ort 41st in one race, then 21st and 22nd respectively in the second race.

Earlier in the week, Richeda scored a podium with a third-place finish in a giant slalom race at Steamboat Ski Area.

Kohlhofer won that race with Kirkwood second.

Kagan was 19th, Fleischer 29th, Nolting 30th, Orozco 33rd, Welch 36th, Overstake 59th, Sandvik 78th and Olson 81st.

Kirkwood won a second GS race, ahead of Kohlhofer in second and Scarpella in third.

Richeda was seventh in that race, Kagan 10th, Fleischer 24th, Welch 31st, Nolting 36th, Overstake 44th, Sandvik 66th and Olson 71st.

Vail swept both girls races with the same finish order. Kjersti Moritz was first in both races, Liv Moritz second and Zoie Palmer third. Gilchrist was 19th in one race and 23rd in the other, Ort 29th in both and Rylee McLouth 44th in one and 45th in the other.

Asher Weinberg of Crested Butte won the week's super-G race. Vail's Scarpella was second and Team Gilboa's Will Utendorfer was third.

Richeda was fifth, Kagan 15th, Welch 34th, Nolting 37th, Orozco 40th, Fleischer 44th, Overstake 64th, Olson 74th and Sandvik 76th in that race.

Palmer led yet another Vail sweep on the girls side. Kjersti Moritz was second and Bruce third. Vail accounted for every podium spot in the girls races all week.

Ort was 24th for Steamboat, Gilchrist 27th and McLouth 57th.
