Two injured in Colo. 131 rollover
September 8, 2003
One man was severely injured early Monday when he drove his truck off the road along Colorado Highway 131.
Scott Allen Updike, 37, and his wife, Angela Updike, 34, were driving north from Vail to Steamboat Springs on Colo. 131. Scott Updike drove off the left side of the roadway and struck a culvert near milepost 33 in Toponas, the Colorado State Patrol said. The 2001 Dodge Ram pickup flew into the air and rolled two and a half times before landing upside down and about 60 feet from the highway.
Yampa Fire and Ambulance had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate Scott Updike. Angela Updike, who the state patrol said was sleeping in the back, was able to free herself from the truck.
The accident was reported at 2:40 a.m. The driver was wearing a seat belt and the passenger was not.
Trooper Rick Kasper said no charges have been filed and alcohol is not suspected to have been a factor.
Scott Updike, who suffered a spinal injury, was taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center and then air-lifted to Denver Health Medical Center. He is still at the hospital.
