Two hockey teams prove to be perfect combination

The Steamboat Springs Chix with Stix teamed up with the Left Hand Brewsers from the Boulder area to win an early season women’s hockey tournament in Colorado Springs.
The newly formed Brewser Chix went 4-1 in the weekend tournament, defeating the Sonoran (Ariz.) Storm in the championship Sunday to win Pucktoberfest.
Seven members from Steam–boat traveled to the Front Range for the three-day hockey tournament. They were Maggie Adams, Lynne Bosley, Lee Cox, Diane Dwire, Sue Heineke, Lisa Owen and Riley Polumbus.
The Brewser Chix opened against the same Storm team it defeated in the championship, winning the opening game, 3-1, behind two goals from Dwire and another from Brewser member Katie Hind. Cox and Heineke were credited with assists.
Goalie Laura Hind made 26 saves.
The second game didn’t go as well. The Brewser Chix lost to the Cliffhangers, 3-0.

The Steamboat/Boulder combination team came back to win both of its Saturday matches, beating the Silverwolves twice in one day. The first victory came in a shootout.
The Brewser Chix were ahead 2-1 at the end of the first period, but the Silverwolves rallied to tie things at 3-3 by the end of the second.
Owen, a defender, scored the first goal for Steamboat/Boulder on a short-handed breakaway. Heineke added the second score on a pass from Dwire. Katie Hind scored her second goal of the tournament with 8 minutes, 30 seconds expired in the second period.
After both teams scored in the third, the teams went to a shootout to determine the winner.
Five players from each team took their turn heading toward the net on a breakaway. Steph–anie Canales and Heineke scored during the shootout, and the Silverwolves got only one puck past Laura Hind, giving the Brewser Chix a 5-4 victory.
Few teams had success getting the puck past Laura Hind during the tournament’s duration.
The same teams met later Saturday, with Steamboat/Boulder winning, 4-2. The Brewser Chix were down 2-0 at the end of the first period but scored four unanswered goals for the win.
Steamboat/Boulder ap—-peared to be headed for a championship rematch with the unbeaten Cliffhangers, but Sonoran upset the top seed in the semifinals, giving the Brewser Chix a chance to replay the Storm.
The first period was scoreless before Heineke got her team on the board on a breakaway goal at the 7:05 mark of the second period. Heidi Anderson scored the team’s second goal with 45 seconds left in the second when she poked a rebound into the net. Heineke had the original shot on goal.
Hind stopped 19 of the 20 shots she faced in net for the Brewser Chix, preserving the championship medal for the Steamboat/Boulder team.
