The Hayden High School volleyball team defeated Grand Valley in four games Tuesday night in Hayden.

The Tigers won the first, third and fourth games in a, 26-24, 25-27, 25-19, 26-24, victory against the Cardinals.

Hayden’s schedule indicated that Tuesday’s match was nonleague, moving the Tigers to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in Western Slope League play.

“The girls did great,” Tigers coach Becky Burdick said. “The girls played really well.”

Junior Emily Whiteman led the way for Hayden with 10 kills. Teammate Katy Koehler, also a junior, had six kills.

“They were doing really well,” Burdick said about the middle blockers.

Burdick said Grand Valley was putting up a block in the middle, but Whiteman and Koehler found ways around it.

Senior Sara Sumerlin and senior setter Mariah Doolin each had five kills. Sophomore Jacquelyn Denker added four kills.

Freshman Kylee Sweetser earned what Burdick called the “All-Star Server” award for her efforts in Tuesday’s win.

“We were down, and she brought us right back up in that first game,” Burdick said. “She’s a great server.”

The Tuesday win was important for Hayden as it eyes a 6 p.m. Friday match against Meeker, a league power. Hayden defeated league power North Park earlier this season.
