Thoughtful Parenting: Free developmental screenings for children birth to 5 in Routt County

Brett Eavenson For Steamboat Today

Over the course of several weeks in March, all three school districts in Routt County will offer free developmental screenings for children birth to age 5 who reside in Routt County.

Steamboat Springs, Hayden and South Routt School Districts, in partnership with the Northwest Colorado BOCES and Horizons Specialized Services, are hosting these community events.

Developmental screenings will be offered by appointment only and will take place at your child's district of residency.

  • For families who reside in Steamboat Springs School District, developmental screenings will be offered on Tuesday, March 6 and Wednesday, March 7.  To schedule a screening in Steamboat Springs, contact Michelle Hansen at 970-871-3198.
  • For families who reside in Hayden School District, screenings will be offered on Wednesday, March 14 and Thursday, March 15.  To schedule a screening in Hayden, contact Danielle Campbell at 970-276-3756.
  • For families who reside in South Routt School District, developmental screenings will be offered on Tuesday, March 20 and Wednesday, March 21.  To schedule a screening in South Routt, contact Cindy Ashley via telephone at 907-870-2659 or via email at cashley@southrouttk12.org.

Developmental screening takes a closer look at how your child is developing and meeting typical milestones in the areas of playing, learning, speaking, moving and behaving. If you have any questions, concerns, or are curious about your child's development in any of these areas, participation in a developmental screening can help answer these.

Children will participate in an individually administered developmental screening as well as have their hearing and vision screened. Developmental screenings will be completed by trained early childhood specialists, including an early childhood teacher, school psychologist, occupational therapist, speech language pathologist, hearing specialist, school nurse and bi-lingual interpreter, if needed.

At the time of screening, families will be provided with their child's developmental screening results, recommendations and possible next steps.
