Tennis players rack up wins in Wyoming

— A contingent of Steamboat Springs youth tennis players shined last weekend as they traveled for the Cheyenne Frontier Days Christmas Junior Tennis Championships in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

At the U16 boys singles level, Charlie Smith led the way after he defeated teammate Troy de Jong in a brutally close semifinal match, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0. Smith advanced to the finals, where he lost in two sets, 7-6, 6-1, to Jackson Johar, of Fort Collins.

Smith and de Jong teamed up for a win, also, in the boys U16 doubles bracket. There, they butted heads with another Steamboater, Nolan Connell, who made the U16 doubles finals with teammate Alex Baum, of Littleton.

At the U14 boys doubles level, River Fox Welch and Max Lynch won the finals against more Steamboat players, Theo Holdeman and Wyatt Stempel, 6-1, 6-0.

Roy Lundeen, from Steamboat, and Ben Vigneri, meanwhile, won the U12 doubles bracket by edging out two Steamboaters, Nate Holdeman and Tommy Regan, 7-5, 6-2.

Lily Fox reached the semifinals of the U14 girls singles bracket. Regan also went 2-0 in a round-robin format at the boys U12 level.
