American Airlines will operate direct flights to Yampa Valley Regional Airport from Dallas beginning June 2.

— The Steamboat Springs City Council voted March 1 in favor of a plan to bolster summer daily flights to Yampa Valley Regional Airport from Houston (IAH) on United Airlines with an additional daily flight from Dallas (DFW) on American Airlines. Those flights are loaded into the airlines' websites and selling this week.

A search for a hypothetical trip from Dallas to the Yampa Valley on July 14, returning July 18, reflected a lowest fare of $495 roundtrip on a 70-passenger CR700 regional jet operated by Envoy Air as American Eagle. The flight is slightly less expensive for a party traveling July 12 – $445 roundtrip — and more expensive for a party traveling July 15 — $505. The flight to Colorado is scheduled to depart Dallas at 11 a.m and arrive at 12:05 p.m. Mountain Time.

The aircraft will turn around at YVRA and take off at 12:36 p.m. with a scheduled arrival time of 3:35 p.m.

On March 10, the United Airlines reservation site showed three remaining seats at a roundtrip price of $506 for a July 14 departure to YVRA, with other flights available for $408 July 12 and $466 July 13. The flights to the Yampa Valley leave Houston at 5:45 p.m. and are scheduled to arrive at 7:35 p.m.

The 52-passenger RJ 145 jet is scheduled to remain on the apron at YVRA overnight, enabling a 7:30 a.m. departure for Houston that should make the flight appealing to local business travelers headed for south Texas and beyond.

Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. Airline Director Janet Fischer said both the Dallas and Houston flights are timed to provide convenient flight connections for travelers originating from cities farther east.

For example, people traveling from New York La Guardia, Philadelphia, Boston and Washington National to YVRA via Dallas will experience waits between flights of one hour to one hour, 30 minutes. Travelers from Florida cities such as Miami and Tampa would have layovers of one hour, 15 minutes to one hour, 45 minutes.

On the Houston flights, connections from Chicago and Minneapolis will be in the range of 45 minutes to one hour, 30 minutes, Fischer said.

The flights are also expected to attract travelers from other cities in Texas. Connections from Austin and San Antonio are one hour to one hour, 45 minutes.

Bob Milne, chairman of the local marketing district board that oversees flight service secured with a mix of private and public dollars in the form of minimum revenue guarantees to the airlines, told Steamboat Today Feb. 26 that having two summer flights will give more options for travelers with just two daily roundtrips on United Express from Denver in the heart of the summer.

"It's serving a lot of needs," Milne said. "United has cut the summer flights from Houston from 75 operations to 45 operations and won't have any flights in June," Milne said. "And with Republic (airlines flying as United Express) leaving Denver and SkyWest planning to run just one (daily) Denver roundtrip in June, the Dallas flights will provide more options coming in and out of the valley in early summer."
