Stephanie Finegan: What an opportunity
January 11, 2015
After reading the latest story about the city of Steamboat looking into becoming a STAR Community, my first thought was "what an opportunity."
Take the recent renewed interest in developing affordable housing in Steamboat. Now is the time to show that the city is taking the commitment to sustainability and affordable housing seriously.
Energy-efficient building practices have been used by production builders for years. Siting and orientation, advanced framing techniques including air sealing and increased levels of insulation, energy-efficient lighting and appliances and water-saving fixtures are not only standard practice in many places, but they do not necessarily increase the cost of the building when done correctly.
This not only makes for an affordable home to buy or rent, it actually becomes a home that is affordable to live in and isn't that what really makes something sustainable?
