Steamboat’s Schwartz headed to World Champs

Sophia Schwartz

— Steamboat Springs freestyle skier Sophia Schwartz caught fire a year ago, going on a tear through the World Cup circuit. Now she’ll get the chance to ski on an even bigger stage.

Schwartz, with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, was selected as one of eight moguls skiers to represent the United States at the 2015 FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships in Kreischberg, Austria.

She’s one of two skiers with Steamboat ties on the list, joining Patrick Deneen, who spent several years connected to the club.

Deneen, a two-time Olympian, will be making his seventh start in his fourth World Championships.

He also competed in the event in 2009, 2011 and 2013 and has stellar results, never finishing below sixth, winning a world championship in 2009 and earning third place in both 2013 competitions.

Schwartz, who lives in Steamboat, spent years training with and even coaching for the Winter Sports Club. Making the World Championship team is the latest highlight in what's been a thrilling year.

Entering the 2013-14 season, she had never started a World Cup. She got hot, however, earning World Cup starts and made the most of them, placing in the top 10 in all seven events she competed in a year ago.

She narrowly missed out on competing in the 2014 Winter Olympics.

She isn't off to as strong a start this season, placing 17th and 27th in the two World Cup's she competed in this season, but will be competing Jan. 14 to 25 at the World Championships in the biggest event of her career to this point.

Also on the moguls team are defending world champ Hannah Kearney, Keaton McCargo, Ali Kariotis, Troy Murphy, Tom Rowley and Bryon Wilson.

Mac Bohonnon, Alex Bowen, Jon Lillis, Mike Rossi, Ashley Caldwell and Kiley McKinnon will compete on the aerials team.
