Steamboat wrestlers set the bar high in season’s 1st action
December 5, 2014
Steamboat Springs — Steamboat Springs High School wrestling hit the mat on a hot streak to start the 2014-15 season Thursday, cruising through Western Slope foes Summit and Battle Mountain in a triangular meet win.
Despite giving up some points by not having athletes in weight classes at 160 pounds, 195 pounds, 220 pounds and 285 pounds, the Sailors beat Battle Mountain, 48-22, and pounded Summit, 51-18.
"Overall, I think they did really well," new coach Travis Bryant said. "The boys executed and were hitting the moves we’ve been practicing."
Every Steamboat wrestler who competed Thursday got a win, and in both duals combined, the Sailors lost just four matches.
Colton Pasternak (106 pounds), Colton Crawford (120 pounds), Lance Bryant (132 pounds), Miles Buchan (138 pounds), Matt Hansen (145 pounds), Hayden Johnson (152 pounds) and Dylan Wallace (182 pounds) all went a perfect 2-0 on the day.
Scott Lang went 1-1 at 170 pounds in his first wrestling action back for Steamboat since he was coached by Travis Bryant in eighth grade. Kyle Spognardi went 1-1 at 113 pounds, and 2013-14 state qualifier Dakota Thvedt went 1-1 at 126 pounds, dropping a thriller against a fellow Class 4A state competitor from Battle Mountain.
