Steamboat squad set for World Series

The U12 Northwest Colorado Storm baseball team placed second in the Triple Crown Mountain Magic tournament in Steamboat Springs June 28. The team travels this weekend for another tournament in Boulder.

— Steamboat Springs U12 boys baseball team has played lots and lots of games over the past several years.

Nothing stacks up next to the Triple Crown World Series, however, and when the 12 boys, their coaches and families trek next week to Park City, coach Jim Hansen said they're in for an experience they won't soon forget.

Who are all those kids?

The answer right now is “soccer players,” but, Triple Crown tournaments have already been keeping Steamboat Springs hopping all summer, and more baseball players are coming.

Tuesday through July 26 — U8, U9 and U14 World Series tournaments

July 28-Aug. 2 — U11 and U13 D1 World Series tournaments

Aug. 4-Aug. 9 — U13 D2 World Series tournament

The tournament begins Monday.

The squad qualified for the event by placing second in its division at the Triple Crown Mountain Magic tournament in Steamboat Springs last month. It's the only Steamboat team that will play in the World Series this summer.

"It's a great event," Hansen said. "The kids are able to watch the best baseball players in the country. They have pin trading and opening ceremonies. It's a real event, a full week of activities."

The team was riding high after that Mountain Magic performance, but isn't coming off its best results. Playing last weekend at the Triple Crown state championship on the Front Range, the squad went 1-3.

Things certainly won't be any easier in Park City, where the team, the Northwest Colorado Storm, will be one of 44 hailing from 10 states.
The team made the tournament last year, but came away without winning a game.

Still, the Storm have beaten some top-tier squads this season, and they're entering the tournament with high hopes.

Teams will play in a pool first, then been seeded in a double-elimination tournament.

"We're going to battle," Hansen said. "I'm very proud of this team, because we've beaten some quality teams, and looking through the schedule, we've definitely beaten several of the teams who are in the World Series, so we feel confident.

"We're excited, just incredibly excited, and we can't wait to get there."

The U10 and U12 divisions will play their World Series tournament in Park City. The U8, U9 and U14 will play in Steamboat beginning Tuesday. U11 and U13 Division 1 teams will play in Steamboat starting July 28, and the U13 Division 2 squads will play in Steamboat starting Aug. 4.
