Steamboat ski jumpers headed for Junior Nationals

A dozen Steamboat athletes qualified for the Junior Nationals in Nordic combined and ski jumping.

A dozen Steamboat Springs Nordic combined skiers and ski jumpers will compete later this winter at Junior Nationals in Anchorage, Alaska after finishing off the qualifying period for that event with a strong finish on their home hill in Steamboat Springs.

Steamboat’s qualified competitors for junior nationals include Logan Sankey, Alexa Brabec, Tess Arnone, Annika Belshaw, Decker Dean, Brenden Andrews, Thomas Miller, Niklas Malacinski, Erik Belshaw, Bennett Gamber, Gunnar Gilbertson and Canden Wilkinson.

The nominations were finalized this week after Steamboat’s skiers dominated the podium at a Saturday event at Howelsen Hill.



There, three athletes won their special jumping divisions off both the HS75 and the HS100 hills. Annika Belshaw did that among the senior women’s class, Decker Dean in the men’s senior division and Erik Belshaw in the U16 boys division.

Tess Arnone was third off the HS100 in the women’s senior division. Niklas Malacinski was third, Bennett Gamber fourth, Canden Wilkinson fifth and Gunnar Gilbertson sixth on the men’s side.



Alexa Brabec was fourth and Arnone fifth off the HS75 in the U16 girls class.

Malacinski was second, Wilkinson third, Gilbertson fourth, Thomas Miller fifth and Wyatt Graves seventh in the U16 boys division off the HS75. Gamber was third in the boys U18 class on that jump.

Annika Malacinski won the HS45 open class, Alexa Brabec the U14 girls on the HS45 and Erik Belshaw the U14 boys on that jump.

Charley Barnes won the open class on the HS30 and Koen Stroock the U12 boys division on that HS30. Ella Wilson won the U10 girls division on the HS20 and Charlie Gunn the boys. Troy LeMaster won the open class on that jump.

Olivia Fountain won the U10 girls Alpine jump event while Will Hall won on the boys side.

For Nordic combined, Gamber won the U18 boys class. Malacinski won the U16 boys class, ahead of Erik Belshaw, second, and Wilkinson, third. Gilbertson was fourth.

Alexa Brabec won the girls U16 division, finishing ahead of Arnone, who was second.

At the U14 level, Aspen Bennett-Manke won on the girls side, ahead of Tinsley Wilkinson and Ella Stroock.

Miller won for the boys, ahead of Koen Stroock and Jason Colby.

Haley Brabec won the U12 girls race. Adrian Beauregard did the same on the boys side while Caman Beauregard and Owen Wither rounded out the podium.

Eva Minotto won the girls U10 division. Shea Sias was second and Dixie Barnes third.

Charlie Gunn won the boys U10 race with Arthur Tirone second and Nathan Rind third.
