Steamboat Sips: Laundry

The Laundry's Kentucky Fall craft cocktail.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — For those who may find themselves in search of a cocktail full of warmth and a dash of something bittersweet to celebrate the victorious end to the workweek, Laundry has just the drink.

The Kentucky Fall is a Laundry-exclusive contemporary concoction.

Assistant manager and bartender Michael Guerrero was behind the bar to mix up the New York inspired cocktail and share the recipe originally created by Tod “JJ” Johnson, manager of the restaurant. Guerrero has been at Laundry on 11th Street since it joined Rex's Family Restaurants in 2012.

The modern, creative craft cocktails start with a base of spirits, infused alcohol then citrus for an adequately balanced flavor profile, according to Johnson.

There's an emphasis on freshness and simplicity.

And to be a good bartender, it takes a bit of finesse and personality.

"People love stories," said Guerrero. "And we like to listen. There are a lot of coworkers here who are well-traveled, so when we meet people who are from around the world, we have a lot in common with them. I think, to be a good bartender, a lot of it is personality and a lot of it is knowing how to pour a good drink."

Ingredients

  •  Bulleit rye whiskey (any rye whiskey is preferred)
  • Apple cider
  • Ginger, black peppercorn simple syrup
  • Fresh lemon juice

Directions

Put ice in the shaker about a fourth of the way up. Pour 1.5 ounces of rye whiskey, 1.5 ounces of apple cider (they use their own house recipe — to make at home mix apple cider and apple juice), 1.5 ounces of ginger, black pepper corn simple syrup, then top it off with a splash of lemon juice.

Shake it up and pour over a large cube of ice into a rock glass.

"You don't want to use ice from the shaker for the drink," said Guerreo. "It will lose the taste and be diluted with the excess water."

Then last but not least, top it off with a dash spice — a mix of cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice.

When you bring it to your nose, with the combination of the spice, cider and whiskey — "It's like Christmas and great for a rainy day."
