Steamboat Sailors weekend schedule

Steamboat Alpine skiing

■ 9:45 a.m. today in Steamboat Springs

The Steamboat Springs High School Alpine ski team wraps up its regular season today at home with a slalom event at Howelsen Hill. The race is the final chance for skiers to qualify for the state championships Feb. 24 and 25 in Aspen. Racers will get two tries on the steep slopes of Howelsen, and action should wrap up by 2 p.m.

Steamboat hockey

■ 6:30 p.m. today: Sailors (13-3) vs. Chatfield (14-2)

■ 5 p.m. Saturday: Sailors at Standley Lake (12-4)

Steamboat can prove it belongs among the top tier of the state's hockey powers with a 6:30 p.m. game today at home against No. 3 Chatfield. Steamboat is ranked No. 4. It won't get any easier Saturday as Steamboat travels to face Standley Lake, which narrowly trails Chatfield and Steamboat in the Foothills Conference standings. If Steamboat wins both games, it could play host to as many as two playoff games, quite a step for a program that hasn't had one in the past five years.

Steamboat boys basketball

■ 7:30 p.m. today: Sailors (12-7) vs. Palisade (8-11)

■ 2 p.m. Saturday: Sailors vs. Delta (8-11)

Steamboat hopes to finish its regular season schedule with an eight-game winning streak but first must handle a pair of sub-.500 opponents this weekend in Steamboat. The Sailors were without leading scorer Charles Wood when they played Palisade and Delta earlier this season. They fell to Palisade, 47-44, but got a huge game from Isiah Mendoza-Forsyth to beat Delta. With Wood back in the lineup, the Sailors have the potential to expand on their current five-game winning streak.

Steamboat girls basketball

■ 6 p.m. today: Sailors (10-9) at Palisade (7-11)

■ 2 p.m. Saturday: Sailors vs. Delta (14-5)

Steamboat split games against Palisade — a 43-27 win — and Delta — a 63-54 loss — earlier this season but could need a sweep this weekend at home against both to keep its flickering playoff hopes alive. The Sailors broke open the game against Palisade by allowing just seven points in the second half. Delta, meanwhile, distanced Steamboat with a 25-5 second quarter.
