Steamboat lands 5 on U.S. Snowboarding Team
December 9, 2012
Steamboat Springs names long have dominated teams like the U.S. Nordic Combined Ski Team, and Steamboat names litter the freestyle skiing ranks.
Local athletes have far more than toehold in the snowboard world, as well. The 2013 U.S. Snowboarding Team was announced Saturday at Copper Mountain and the list is overflowing with Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club athletes.
Matt Ladley and Benji Farrow are on the U.S. men's pro half-pipe team. Maddy Schaffrick, meanwhile, is on the women's pro half-pipe team.
Taylor Gold and Arielle Gold rode their way onto the U.S. half-pipe rookie team.
The squad begins its season of competition Thursday with a Dew Tour stop in Breckenridge that will span the weekend.
“It's a great way to start off our season with a naming like this and get everyone together," U.S. Snowboarding coach Mike Jankowski said in a news release. "These athletes have been training so hard, and it's cool to watch them progress in training and in competitions. I am looking forward to watching each and every one of our athletes achieve their goals for the season. I think we have a really cohesive team and before we know it, it will be 2014 and the Olympics will be upon us and I can't wait to be there with them."
