Steamboat hockey caps strong season of home performances

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The Steamboat Springs High School hockey team wrapped up a sweep of its weekend schedule, its final home weekend of the year, on Saturday with a 4-1 win against Kent Denver.
That followed up an 8-3 win Friday for the Sailors and capped a wildly successful run this season on home ice. Steamboat went 8-1-1 in its home games.
Saturday, Steamboat got two goals early for a quick lead, then one goal each in the second and third periods to keep things from getting too interesting.
Sean Sullivan scored first for Steamboat, and just 30 seconds into the game. Sean Janka followed about four minutes later.
Kent Denver answered late in the first, but Nate Kelley scored for Steamboat in the second period, then Grant McNamara added a goal in the third.
Friday, a first-period onslaught gave the Sailors a big early lead, though it took a big third period to secure the win.

Tanner Ripley scored first for Steamboat and David LaPointe added a little more than a minute later. Finally Kelley made it 3-0 before the end of the period.
Steamboat’s Quinn Morton added one more goal, making it 4-0, but Standley Lake answered in a big way, scoring three goals in a span of just 121 seconds to pull within one.
Kelley helped stomp any Gators momentum with an overwhelming scoring performance in the third period. He built Steamboat’s lead back to two goals with a score 37 seconds into the third. Johnathon Kaminski added a goal just six seconds later. Kelley then scored two more times to close out the game despite the fact that he didn’t actually finish the game on the ice. He was ejected late in the third for slew footing.
The weekend bumped Steamboat’s record to 12-3-1 on the season with three regular-season games remaining. The team will travel next weekend to face Standley Lake and Fort Collins, a key game. Steamboat’s No. 1 in the Pinnacle Conference and Fort Collins is right behind in second place.
The two teams played to a draw when the met several weeks ago in Steamboat.
The Sailors will then wrap up their regular season Feb. 13 with a trip to play Summit.
