Steamboat High School celebrates homecoming

Christine Metz

— Walking around the halls of Steamboat Springs High School Tuesday afternoon were students dressed in toga-like white sheets, cowboy hats and Hawaiian attire.

Yes, it’s a little too early for Halloween. But it’s the prefect timing for Homecoming events like Salad Day where students could dress as salad dressings Caesar, ranch and thousand island.

Salad Day is just one of the many events planned for Steamboat’s homecoming week that will end Saturday night with a homecoming dance.

Throughout the week, students will have Decade Day, when they can dress from a favorite decade, Salad Day, Pajama Day, Super Hair Day and Spirit Day.

Since the beginning of the school, Jill Miller’s leadership class has been organizing the week, working on the project every day during second period.

“It’s lots of planning,” Miller said. “It shows how hard it is to get orders, to have conversations between legal people for the parade; and they really had to deal with compromising with administration with time restrictions, scheduling and all those things.”

With the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the organizers have made a few changes in this year’s homecoming week. As part of the Spirit Stick competition, which decides the class with the most spirit, the students are collecting change in jars in the school’s cafeteria. That money will go to the Red Cross along with $1 from every $8 ticket sale at the homecoming dance.

During the parade, Miller also is encouraging parade spectators and home- and business owners to have American, Steamboat Springs and Sailors flags waving. To show American pride, students also added blue to their traditional Spirit Day colors of red and white worn on Friday.

Another change the leadership class has made is having alumni participate in this year’s parade.

“In the past, homecoming was a real community time. (Steamboat) had gotten away from that in recent years,” Miller said. “This is going to be a stepping stone.”

The homecoming committee is inviting all Steamboat Springs alumni to walk behind the floats and royal court. The Class of 1946 and the middle school will also have floats in the parade.

Alumni who want to walk should meet at the entrance of the school parking lot at 1:45 p.m. and wear red, white and blue.

Homecoming’s main day is Friday. It is kicked off after lunch when students compete in the Talisman Event, where classes face off in tug-of-war and lifesaver relies.

At 2 p.m. the parade follows, which will take floats, decorated pickup trucks and marching alumni onto Maple Street down Fourth Street to Lincoln Avenue turning up Ninth to Pine Street and back to the high school.

During halftime at Friday night’s football’s game, the homecoming king and queen will be crowned.

This year’s nominees include for the senior girls class Jessica Flores, Ashlee Faulkner, Cassidy Kurtz and Mackenzie Little. The senior boys court will be Rich Tifft, Gaspar Perricone, Ryan Scheer and Zeb Croll. Students nominated for the underclassmen’s royal court were juniors Ashley Idzahl and Chase Baker, sophomores Jessica Vernon and Niles Nelson and freshmen Nicole Balvany and Kevin Dombey.

On Thursday, the Sailors will hold a pep rally and bonfire at the rodeo grounds after the Sailors’ 6 p.m. soccer game.

Today is the last day for Sailor fans to purchase corsages for homecoming. If interested call the high school at 879-1562.
