Steamboat girls basketball team’s struggles continue

Steamboat Springs girls basketball coach Mack Spitellie said his team is slowly improving, but on Saturday, that still wasn't enough to snap a losing streak.

The Sailors lost their fourth in a row, falling at home against Rifle, 50-35.

"We just didn't play well as a team," Spitellie said. "We didn't have good chemistry tonight."

He pointed to good games from Maddie Robertson, especially defensively, and Amaris Duryea, Rifle's leading scorer.

"This is two games in a row Aramis has been Rifle's best girl, and she's done her job," Spitellie said.

The team, 7-8 and 2-6, next plays at home Friday against Palisade.

"We're slowly but surely getting better and getting more kids healthy," Spitellie said. "Hopefully, we can start playing together like a team, like we did at the beginning of the season."
