Steamboat girls basketball squad stumbles in opener

Joel Reichenberger

— It was a rough start to the season for the Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team Monday night, playing at home against Grand Junction Central to open the 2014-15 campaign.

The Sailors fell, 45-37, never able to recover from a listless second quarter.

“It was just a very rough game for us,” Steamboat coach Mack Spitellie said. “We did show we had some real grit in sticking around and getting back into the game in the fourth quarter. We just had an awful second quarter and that was basically the game.”

Steamboat led early, 7-5 after the first, but was outscored 11-4 in the second.

Annie Osbourn and Jenna Miller each scored 14 to lead the Sailors.

“They had great games,” Spitellie said. “I’m giving big kudos to Annie. She was sicker than a dog during the game but played her heart out.”

He said the squad struggled with turnovers, but that the game went better as it went on.

The team will need to continue that improvement this weekend if the Sailors are to make progress at the Brenda Patch Tournament in Aspen.

The Sailors will play host Aspen on Friday, then Roaring Fork on Saturday.

“Taking care of the basketball is our main concern,” Spitellie said.
