Steamboat gets tough draw in soccer
October 20, 2008
Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs boys soccer team was upset in its final regular season game of the year. The Sailors will need to find some underdog magic of their own if they’re to make much of a run in this year’s Class 4A state soccer playoffs.
Steamboat drew the 23rd seed in this year’s 32-team field and will face off against No. 10 Wheat Ridge in the tournament opener. The game, scheduled for Wednesday, will ensue at Wheat Ridge.
The Sailors (10-5) enter the tournament on a two-game skid, having lost most recently at Moffat County in double overtime. They’ll need to turn things around quick against the Farmers, one of the best squads in the state. Wheat Ridge (12-2-1) finished second in the JeffCo conference and hasn’t lost since early in September.
Steamboat did beat the one team to finish ahead of the Farmers in that conference, knocking off Summit, 4-1, in the first game of the season. Wheat Ridge beat Summit as well, and both teams beat Centaurus in their only other action against mutual opponents.
The Farmers have been led this season by junior Reid Hukari, who has scored 17 goals.
