Steamboat firefighters deployed to 416 Fire near Durango

Firefighters engaged in active firefighting last night on the south side of the 416 fire. No structures were damaged or lost, and no firefighters were injured.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Three Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue firefighters are joining the fight near Durango, where the 416 Fire has burned more than 23,000 acres and prompted the closing of the San Juan National Forest.

Fire Chief Mel Stewart said firefighters Leighton White, Matt Mathisen and Nick Brookshire left Tuesday for Durango in a brush truck for a two-week deployment.

The agencies paying to fight the fire will reimburse Steamboat Fire Rescue for the personnel and equipment.

The agency will also pay to have other people fill in for the firefighters while they are in Southwest Colorado.
