Years at the market: First year

Healthy Harvest is a small, family-owned business that was founded 13 years ago by owner Karl Burgartand, an organic farmer from Missouri. After seeing the longevity and vitality of the village people who had enjoyed a traditional Mediterranean diet their whole life, he wanted to share their wisdom with as many as possible.

Specialty: Offering authentic extra virgin olive oil and olives straight from single estates in Greece, Italy and Spain. Burgartand travels the world visiting the farms to ensure transparency and to share stories of the growers.

Factoid: “We still do everything by hand in small batches, from making the products, to packaging, to labeling,” said Amy Wansing, Healthy Harvest food blogger.

In 2010, University of California-Davis found 86 percent of the olive oils sold in the U.S. that were tested did not qualify as “extra virgin” even if that was on the label, Wansing said.

“This is why we visit our source farms, rather than using a distributor,” she said. “We also send our products for independent testing to verify its authenticity.”

Give this a try: Healthy Harvest’s True Tuscan extra virgin olive oil has a robust, peppery flavor. Or experiment with one of the infused olive oils such as the lemon and garlic variety.

Be on the lookout: Explore will be highlighting a Farmers Market vendor each week this summer.
