Steamboat closes all but 2 lifts Tuesday because of weather
April 9, 2013
Steamboat Springs — Most of the chairlifts at Steamboat Ski Area closed at about 10:15 a.m. Tuesday because of sustained winds in the upper 50 mph range, according to a news release from the ski area.
Christie Peak Express and Bashor remained open throughout the day.
The ski area reported 2 inches of new snow at midmountain and 3 inches at the summit as of 1 p.m. Tuesday. The blizzard that was forecast to hit Colorado was expected to bring 10 to 20 inches of snow to the ski area by Wednesday morning, according to http://www.snowalarm.com, but all that showed up was the wind.
The ski area expected all of its remaining 12 lifts to operate Wednesday. Bar UE, Pony Express, Preview and Rough Rider have closed for the season.
The National Weather Service was forecasting 1 to 2 inches of snow accumulation in the Yampa Valley overnight Tuesday. Wednesday is expected to be partly cloudy with a high near 38 before another storm system rolls into the area Wednesday night. That storm could bring a chance of rain and snow to the valley through the end of the week.
