Willow Creek Dam work to continue throughout month

Beginning mid-May, dam engineers are performing a geotechnical evaluation of the Willow Creek Dam at Steamboat Lake State Park, according to a news release from Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

The investigation of the dam’s structure, which includes the extraction of soil samples, will aid in the design of a buttress to strengthen the dam’s left abutment.

Visitors to Steamboat Lake State Park are asked to avoid the dam while the work progresses. Engineers say the project should take no more than two weeks to complete, depending on weather conditions.

“The dam is not experiencing any problems, and there is no concern for public safety at this time,” said Dam Safety Engineer John Clark in the release. “This evaluation will help us provide long-term stability to the dam, which will make it even safer than it is today.”

Steamboat Lake State Park Manager Julie Arington reminds visitors to watch for heavy equipment and avoid construction areas.

“This will have very minimal impacts to park visitors,” she said. “We invite the public to enjoy our park but be mindful of the work on the dam.”
