Montessori school opens class lottery Friday

Mountain Village Montessori Charter School in Steamboat Springs will offer both full-day and half-day kindergarten positions, and a kindergarten lottery will be held Friday, Oct. 28, for the 2017-18 school year.

Applicants may participate in an early lottery for kindergarten as much as two years and seven months before starting kindergarten. The half-day program will be offered free of charge due to public funding received by the school and full-day kindergarten will require tuition to cover the portion of the school day not covered by public funding.

Parents and legal guardians interested in participating in this early lottery must follow the same steps outlined in the enrollment policy, available online at mvmcs.org/enrollment.

Those whose children gain a kindergarten spot may choose to enroll their children in the MVMCS preschool program. If they elect to enroll in the preschool program, they will then be able to continue into the public charter portion of MVMCS without participating in the lottery a second time. If they elect not to enroll their student in the MVMCS preschool program, they may wait to enroll their child into kindergarten for the school year position allocated in the early lottery.

Visit mvmcs.org/enrollment or call 970-879-6653 for more information.

Local Rotary Club names October student of month

Jacob Taulman has been named student of the month by Rotary Club of Steamboat Springs for October. The Steamboat Springs High School senior has worked with STARS — Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports — for the past three summers as well as being a basketball camp counselor and coach.

After graduating, Taulman intends to study abroad for a year before attending college.

“Jacob exemplifies every quality that Rotary stands for: moral character, a desire to help others and a commitment to his community,” high school counselor Danica Moss wrote in her recommendation for Taulman.

Taulman’s inclination to help others is evident through his work with STARS, Moss said. Last year, he was only paid two out of the four days he worked, volunteering half of his time there.

“It is the best job ever,” Taulman said. “I work with kids and people with disabilities. Through my experience, I have learned that every person, no matter what they look like, are all equal. So I need to treat everyone the same because you never know how that person might impact your life.”

Another quality Taulman possesses is an aptitude to lead. Taulman’s essay on the qualities of leader earned him a spot at the highly selective Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference. He was also asked to return to the conference the following year as a counselor, an opportunity very few of the participants were granted.

Despite these accomplishments, Taulman views his biggest achievement as staying true to himself.

“I am most proud of my ability to not concern myself with what all the ‘popular’ kids are doing.” Taulman said. “Throughout my four years here, I have stayed true to myself, my character and my values every time. I have not cared about being cool and doing what everyone else is doing. I have done what I want to do without anyone changing my opinion.”
