Steamboat advances to 2nd round of best town contest

Steamboat Springs has advanced to the second round of OUTSIDE Magazine’s reader contest to select the Best Town in America.

The initial bracket was made of 64 towns, and last week, readers voted on their favorite towns and narrowed the competition to 32, including Steamboat, which is included in the Mountain Town bracket. Other towns remaining in the Mountain Town bracket include Durango; Bishop, California; Jackson, Wyoming; Sedona, Arizona; Tucson, Arizona; Sun Valley, Idaho and Waterbury, Vermont.

Throughout the next five weeks, readers will continue to vote once per round for each of the five remaining rounds, with each round of voting lasting five days. The winners of each round will advance until the final two towns face off in a showdown to determine the Best Town of 2016.

Wildlife documentary to screen at 6:30 Wednesday

Bud Werner Memorial Library, Yampatika and Bird Conservancy of the Rockies will present a screening of “The Messenger,” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, in Library Hall.

The documentary, which won the Best of Festival Award at the 2016 International Wildlife Film Festival last month, is about songbirds, and the free community screening honors of the upcoming International Migratory Bird Day celebrations.

The film explores the deep-seated connection to birds and warns that the uncertain fate of songbirds might mirror the fate of humanity.

Moving from the northern reaches of the Boreal Forest to the base of Mount Ararat in Turkey to the streets of New York, “The Messenger” examines the variety of human-made perils that have devastated thrushes, warblers, orioles, tanagers, grosbeaks and many other airborne music-makers and spotlights those who are working to turn the tide.
