Registration is open for the Paul Dietz Horsemanship Clinic this weekend. The class focuses on vaquero principles in horsemanship, and Dietz' objective is to help each rider experience correct feel, timing and balance. Call 970-879-6201 for more information.
Rabbit Ears Pass geology hike slated for Saturday
A Rabbit Ears Pass geology hike is from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The hike, which is led by Yampatika and Betsy Frick, will cover glacial erratics, extrusive volcanic rocks and weathering and erosion processes as well as discuss the differences in mountain peaks of extrusive igneous rocks, like Rabbit Ears Peak, and remnants of intrusive igneous volcanic plugs like Walton and Whitley peaks. The walk is easy to moderate until you reach the base of the ears, where the hike becomes strenuous for the last 75 yards. The cost is $40 for Yampatika members and $50 for nonmembers. Transportation is included, and registration is required by calling Yampatika at 970-871-9151.
Auction to benefit Haven Assisted Living Center
The Haven Assisted Living Center in Hayden is offering a guided elk or deer hunt through Barnes Outfitters as a fundraiser. Bids can be placed at http://www.havenseniorliving.com/fundraiser starting at $1,100 and increasing in $100 increments.
The auction closes at noon Friday, and the winner will be announced at the annual Haven Barbecue and Barn Dance, which is from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday. The cost to attend is $8 for students, $15 for adults, $25 for couples, $40 for families and free for children younger than 5.

A silent auction also will be featured at the barn dance including a guided fishing trip, memberships at the Trapper Health Club in Craig and Old Town Hot Springs in Steamboat, golfing or lessons at Yampa Valley Golf Course, homemade cookies, cleaning services, physical therapy sessions and more.

Cantafio awarded degree in energy management
Ralph A Cantafio, Esq., was awarded a Master of Science in global energy management Saturday from the University of Colorado Denver, according to a news release. Global energy management is an 18-month graduate business course focusing on the energy sector and includes courses in accounting, economics, strategic management, finance and marketing.
Cantafio graduated with honors and a GPA of 3.95.
Donations sought for area teacher with leukemia
Steamboat teacher Dan Juba, who was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in July 2012 before going into remission later in the year, found out this month that the disease has returned, according to a news release.
