Steamboat briefs: Large part of Spring Creek Trail closed until April 15

A large portion of the Spring Creek Trail has been closed to public access as part of the annual seasonal wildlife closure that began Thursday. The seasonal closure is done in cooperation with the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife to provide winter habitat for the local elk herd. The trail will remain closed until April 15. The closure begins about 1 1/2 miles up the trail from Amethyst Drive, and access is blocked by a gate. For more information about wildlife closures, call area wildlife manager Jim Haskins at 970-871-2842.

Skate-a-thon on Saturday benefits Autism Program

The Yampa Valley Autism Program's annual Skate-a-thon is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Howelsen Ice Arena. The "kids helping kids" fundraiser has participants collect pledges for the number of laps they can skate around the ice rink. Kids also can pledge a flat fee. Prizes are given for most laps skated and most money raised within each age group.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Yampa Valley Autism Program and the programming it provides to local kids and families dealing with autism and related disorders. Those programs include family support services, respite care, social cognition training and group therapy. The Yampa Valley Autism Program currently serves 60 families.

There will be refreshments, music and a halftime contest. Participants can bring their own skates or borrow a pair from the ice arena. Call 970-870-4263 to pick up a pledge packet, or stop by the ice arena.

Celebrate National Hospice Month during November

November is National Hospice Month. Hospice care involves a team-oriented approach to care that includes expert medical care, pain and symptom management, and emotional and spiritual support. All care is expressly tailored to the patient's needs and wishes.

Hospice is covered under Medicare, Medicaid, most private insurance plans, HMOs and other managed care organizations. Cancer accounts for less than 36 percent of hospice patients. The five other leading diagnoses for hospice patients are heart disease, debility, dementia (including Alzheimer's disease), lung disease and stroke. To learn more about Hospice or to become a volunteer, go to http://www.nwcovna.org/hospice_and_palliative_care.php or call the Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association at 970-879-1632.
