Steamboat briefs: Horizons seeks volunteers to be individual mentors

Local residents can support Meels on Wheels with $1

Routt County residents can support the Council on Aging’s Meals on Wheels program by buying a wheel for $1 at the following locations: Ciao Gelato, Bamboo Market, the Steamboat Springs Community Center or the South Routt Community Center. In 2013, the Council on Aging will deliver about 3,000 Meals on Wheels to homebound senior citizens. For more information, call 970-879-0633.

Resident looking for ukulele players to perform in group

Steamboat Springs resident Dan Tyler is looking for ukulele players interested in joining a group that would practice and perform together. Denver’s Rocky Mountain Ukulele Orchestra Conductor Gary Jugert has indicated he would travel to Steamboat to help organize the group. Players of all levels and ages are welcome to join. Tobacco cessation kits available in Steamboat

The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association is offering a free gift for friends and family members who want to quit tobacco this holiday season. QuitKits and information about how to quit smoking or using smokeless tobacco are available in the lobby of the Steamboat VNA office at 940 Central Park Drive, Suite 101. Anyone who wants to give the gift of health for themselves or someone they know can pick up a QuitKit or call the free Colorado QuitLine at 800-QUIT-NOW.

Tickets for Dancing with the Stars on sale for $50

Tickets for the second annual Dancing with the Stars are on sale at All That Jazz. Tickets are $50. Proceeds from ticket sales and a silent auction benefit Northwest Rocky Mountain CASA, which provides advocacy services to abused and neglected children to help assure their needs are met. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Jan. 12 at Strings Music Pavilion, where eight stars will compete along with their choreographers for the Grand Winner title, now held by Pam Vanatta. This year’s stars include Adonna Allen, Caroline Lalive, Lisa Olson, Terin Petersen, Moose Barrows, Charles Feldmann, Kipp Rillos and Scott Stanford. For more information, call 970-819-6233.



Atmos reminds customers how to prevent poisoning

Atmos Energy is reminding customers to take steps to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas and prolonged exposure can be fatal. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, sleepiness, weakness, vomiting, dizziness and tightness in the chest. If you or your family members experience these symptoms, call 911, stop using the suspected gas appliance until it has been inspected, and call Atmos Energy at 1-866-322-8667.

To help prevent carbon monoxide poisoning:

■ Install carbon monoxide detectors on all floors where bedrooms are located.

■ Do not idle a car in an attached garage.

■ Make sure chimneys and flues are clean and unobstructed and that appliances and portable heaters have proper ventilation systems.

■ Remove clutter from around gas furnaces and water heaters, and change furnace filters regularly.

■ Do not use natural gas ovens as a heating source.

■ Do not use charcoal indoors.

Solandt Memorial Hospital has available appointments

The Solandt Memorial Hospital continually aims to pay tribute to the memory of pioneer physician John Solandt by maintaining, preserving and using the community building in Hayden for health and well-being services that provide for the needs of the community.
