Steamboat briefs: Hector Lopez recognized as Rotary’s Student of Month
December 11, 2014
Hector Lopez was named the Rotary Club of Steamboat Springs' Student of the Month for November. He is a senior at Steamboat Springs High School.
According to high school counselor Danica Moss, who nominated Lopez for the award, he began elementary school not speaking any English and has grown into an exceptional student, varsity athlete and talented artist.
"Hector is a stellar young man, who has strong leadership qualities, a driven desire to learn and a smile that lights up a room," Moss wrote in her nomination letter. "He has worked hard to assimilate into the Steamboat culture. He is an intelligent young man that takes life for all it is worth."
Lopez is a member of the boys varsity soccer and basketball teams at Steamboat High School, and he also loves to draw. Last year, he completed Advanced Placement art, the highest art class offered at the high school. He also was chosen to be a counselor for the sixth-grade Yampa Valley Science School.
When Lopez enters college to pursue architecture next fall, he will be the first member of his family to attend college.
"I believe that his dream of a college education is equally for him as well as the rest of his family," Moss said.
