Steamboat briefs: Free preschool developmental screenings to be offered







The Steamboat Springs School District will offer free preschool developmental screenings from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 7 and Wednesday, March 8 at the school district administration building, 325 Seventh St.

Screenings will cover vision, hearing, concepts, social skills, motor skills and speech and language. Staff from Northwest Colorado Board of Cooperative Educational Services and certified teachers will be on site to assess children and determine any developmental areas in which a child might need support during the 2017-18 school year.



The free screenings are open to children age 3 as of Oct. 1.

Lower Knoll lot to be closed to public parking Saturdays

The lower Knoll parking lot at Steamboat Ski Area will serve as a drop-off and pick-up area for participants in the resort’s Trail Busters and Mini Busters children’s ski and snowboard programs held Saturdays. The lot will be closed to public parking all day on Saturdays through March, 4. Additional free parking is available in the Upper Knoll Lot and Meadows Lot, and paid parking is available at Gondola Square and Torian Plum Plaza.

Application deadline for audition coming soon

The Yampa Valley Music Teachers Association will host its annual Honors Concert and auditions April 8 and 9. Private instructors can find information and nominate students via an application form by contacting steamboatartsconsultancy@gmail.com or visiting facebook.com/theartsconsultancy. Application deadline is March 17. 

Routt County United Way grant cycle nears deadline

RCUW funds programs in early childhood education, youth success, income stability and health and crisis emergency services. 

The deadline for grant applications is 5 p.m. March 17. 

RCUW encourages community programs and organizations who have programs that fit the group’s impact areas to apply.

Commissioners’ meetings to be held Mondays, Tuesdays

The Routt County commissioners meet at 10:30 a.m. Mondays and Tuesdays in the historic Routt County Courthouse, 522 Lincoln Ave. in Steamboat Springs, except for holidays. Monday meetings are labeled work sessions and many discussions are preparation for a Tuesday session on the same subject, when a formal vote may take place.

Agendas for both days may be viewed at the county website at co.routt.co.us under the “Your Government” heading on the Friday before the meetings. Tuesday agendas typically include links to PDF documents containing detailed information about the agenda item.

Routt County also provides a way for residents to listen live to Tuesday meetings by calling into them at 970-870-5499.

Library offers improved research via online database

Hayden Public Library is now offering online database options to patrons to improve their research experience.

These databases include Auto Repair Reference Center, Consumer Health Complete, Business Search Premier, Legal Information Reference Center, Psychology & Behavioral Science, Explora for the elementary, middle and high school, Science Reference Center, Funk & Wagnalls New Encyclopedia, Newspaper Source and much more.

T-shirt sale to benefit 3rd-grade girl battling cancer

A T-shirt sale is taking place to benefit Sofia Scherff-Zamora, a Strawberry Park Elementary third-grader battling kidney cancer.

A “Team Sofia” T-shirt has been designed with the help of Chaos Ink in Craig, with shirts available for $18. Ten dollars from each shirt sold will go directly to the family to offset medical bills and travel expenses to Denver for treatment.

Those interested in purchasing a T-shirt can do so with a credit or debit card directly through Chaos Ink, by calling 970-824-3920 or visiting the shop at 80 East Fourth St. in Craig.

A variety of crisis support lines are available 24 hours per day to connect local residents dealing with a personal mental health or other type of crisis with trained professionals or volunteers who can provide support.

Routt County United Way launches new network

Routt County United Way has announced the start of its new volunteer network, Get Involved Routt County.

This innovative resource will serve as a one-stop interactive hub for both volunteers and nonprofits. Volunteers can easily access volunteer opportunities from various organizations in Routt County visiting to volunteer.routtcountyunitedway.org and completing a short profile.

According to United Way officials, Get Involved Routt County is a game-changer for the community’s volunteer network, making it easier for nonprofits to fill their needs and for active citizens to get involved and give back to their community.

Locally grown fresh produce, meat, eggs, jelly, sauces, granola and more are available.

Order online from noon Monday through noon Thursday. Orders may be picked up Friday afternoons at CAA offices in downtown Steamboat Springs.
