Steamboat man assaulted, airlifted to Denver hospital

A Steamboat Springs man was airlifted to a Denver hospital Sunday after suffering head injuries during an apparent assault.

Steamboat Springs police say they were called to the 600 block of Oak Street at 7:35 a.m. Sunday for a report of a broken windshield. When an officer arrived on scene, he found the victim lying in the street and attempting to stand up.

The man is thought to have suffered a facial fracture, as well as internal bleeding in his head. His name was not released, and his condition Sunday evening was unknown.

The man told officers he moved to Steamboat Springs from Georgia about two weeks ago and had been out at a bar with friends Saturday night. When his friends left, he met a different group of men and began talking with them. The men told the victim he could go to their house, police said. Officers said the last thing the man remembers is walking down an alley near Oak Street.

Officer JD Paul, who responded to the scene, said it appears the man was knocked to the ground and kicked repeatedly. Paul said the victim tried to enter a nearby vehicle, and when that effort failed, he climbed inside a parked SUV. Paul said officers found blood in the SUV, where they assume the victim spent the remainder of the evening.

The owners of the vehicles declined to press charges, officers said. Officers have no suspects or leads. Anyone with information about the assault is asked to call Steamboat Springs police at 879-1144.
