Power outage at Steamboat Ski Area

A Yampa Valley Electric Association equipment malfunction led to a 50-minute blackout at Gondola Square, the Sheraton Steamboat Resort and other areas near Ski Time Square on Tuesday morning.

YVEA spokesman Jim Chappell said the power went out just after 9 a.m. Crews restored power at about 10 a.m.

“We had a piece of equipment fail, but we are not sure why,” he said. “I know we switched the line around to isolate the defective equipment and we are in the process of changing it out.”

Chappell added that the faulty piece of equipment was installed this summer. YVEA workers will investigate why it malfunctioned.
