Steamboat Briefs: CNCC in Hayden offering new classes starting today

Colorado Northwestern Community College is offering classes Mondays at the Hayden Public Library taught by Dede Huston. Kids Have Fun and Improve Your Reading and Become a Proficient Babysitter start today. The college offers a 16-week Body Sculpting Class at The Haven Community Center beginning today. The class is taught by trainer Tammy Workman. Call 276-7291 to sign up for classes.

Hospital phone system upgrade starts Tuesday

Yampa Valley Medical Center is upgrading its telephone system Tuesday and June 22.

Starting at 5 a.m. Tuesday, the only line open to the hospital will be the main number, 879-1322.

Calls will be forwarded to an internal cell phone and answered by a nurse supervisor. No other direct line numbers will be available for about 15 minutes.

YVMC still is working out the details of the June 22 upgrade but expects the same restriction to start at 5 a.m. and last 30 minutes.

Ninth annual grill-off, pie contest is Saturday at Ace

The ninth annual beef grill-off and homemade pie contest is Saturday at Ace at the Curve. The Routt County CattleWomen and the Steam­boat Smokehouse also are sponsoring the event.

Grillers can start at 8 a.m. and must finish by 11 a.m. Pies are due by 10:30 a.m. and lunch will start at 11:30 a.m. Smokehouse will provide beef. Sign-up sheets for the event are at Ace.

Grillers must pay $10 to enter, and the pie contest costs $5 per contestant.

Grillers will use a top round that can be cut into steaks or left as a roast. Steamboat Meat & Seafood Co. will supply the meat.

Prizes at the event include a gas grill, savings bonds and rodeo tickets.
