Steamboat briefs: Artists sought for expansion project, deadline extended

Noyes Art Designs invites artists on behalf of Yampa Valley Medical Center to submit artwork proposals to be commissioned for purchase and permanent exhibition in the interior of the expansion.

Deadline for submission has been extended to Dec. 11, and there is no fee to submit.

The expansion and refurbishing of the Yampa Valley Medical Center is an exciting project whose vision will be represented in the artwork scheme developed by Noyes Art Designs. Noyes Art Designs has a passion for creating art in healing art programs that matches the passion of not only the hospital, but also northwestern Colorado.

Hayden library scheduled to close for Thanksgiving

Hayden Public Library will be closed Thursday, Nov. 26, and Friday, Nov. 27, for Thanksgiving. The library will reopen from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 28.



Ski Town Lions Club meets 2nd, 4th Tuesday of month

The Steamboat Ski Town Lions Club meets from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at The Egg & I restaurant. 

Chartered in 1923, the group is one of Steamboat’s oldest civic organizations. Meetings are open to members as well as those who are interested in learning more about the Lions Club.

The Steamboat Ski Town Lions Club is made up of civic-minded men and women of all ages who identify needs within the Steamboat Springs community and work to fulfill them. 

Throughout the years, the group plans or participates in numerous events and programs. It collects eyeglasses for those in need and provides free vision screening for youths in Routt County schools and at health fairs. It supports United Way Day of Caring and the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. It provides scholarships for high school seniors and funding for local youth groups such as Rocky Mountain Youth Corps. 

Events include the group’s annual Thanksgiving turkey drive, highway cleanup days, participation in the Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup, Fourth of July Pancake Breakfast and Hot Air Balloon Rodeo. The club’s largest fundraiser is its annual Christmas tree sale in November and December.

Yampa Valley, Colorado Gives Day slated for Dec. 8

Yampa Valley Gives is gearing up for another successful day of giving Tuesday, Dec. 8, Colorado Gives Day. Last year the local effort raised more than $400,000 for 40 local nonprofits in only 24 hours. This year 53 local nonprofits are participating, all of which can be found at yampavalleygives.org. Those who don’t want to wait until Dec. 8 to make their donations, can go to the website before then to pre-schedule a donation for that day. Statewide and local incentive funds increase the value of every dollar donated on that day. 

Photo contest helps gear up for Colorado Gives Day

In anticipation of Colorado Gives Day on Dec 8, Yampa Valley Gives is celebrating the many ways people give to the Yampa Valley throughout the year. The group is asking people to share photos and explain how they give back for a chance to win $500 for a favorite nonprofit that is participating in this year’s Colorado Gives Day. Use #igiveyv on Twitter or Instagram to enter.

The contest will run through Dec 6. The winning photo will be selected at the Gives Day Party at High Five on Dec 8. By entering the contest, participants agree to allow YVG to use photo entries for promotional purposes.

Volunteers sought to ring holiday bell for United Way

Routt County United Way is seeking volunteers to be part of the timeless bell ringing tradition by greeting holiday shoppers and spreading Christmas cheer in front of Safeway and City Market.

The bell ringing will begin Friday, Nov. 27 and continue through Thursday, Dec. 24. Civic groups are encouraged to volunteer. Organizations are needed to take an 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. shift.

Snurfer on display at Tread of Pioneers Museum

Tread of Pioneers Museum in Steamboat Springs has a new display on the Snurfer, the snowboard’s predecessor. The exhibit includes first- and second-generation versions of this popular toy that debuted in 1966. The museum at 800 Oak St. is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and admission is free for Routt County residents.

US Forest Service maps available in digital format

Nearly 700 digital U.S. Forest Service maps now can be accessed via a smartphone by downloading the PDF Maps Mobile App, which is available for free from iTunes and the Android Play Store, according to a news release.

Through the app, users can purchase and download maps that are stored on their devices and can use the maps based on their location when GPS is available. The maps also will allow users to measure distance and area, find coordinates, open a current view in Google Maps, plot place marks, add notes, enter data and add photos, according to a news release.

Food boxes available for low-income senior citizens

Commodities Supplemental Food Program boxes are designed to supplement the diets of low-income seniors 60 and older. The boxes, distributed monthly by LiftUp of Routt County to area seniors, contain a variety of nonperishable food items and cheese. Local Questers Chapter in need of new members

The Steamboat Springs Questers Chapter is seeking several new members. Founded in 1975, Steamboat Questers is a group of women who support historic preservation and appreciate antiques and collectibles. The chapter currently has a membership of 15 and hopes to expand.

Questers is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to the study, conservation and preservation of historical objects for the benefit of today and tomorrow. The Steamboat chapter has supported numerous Routt County historic preservation projects through contributions and grants. It has also donated to statewide preservation endeavors and national scholarship funds.

The Steamboat chapter holds morning meetings nine times per year on the second Tuesday. Members pay annual dues of $30. Every two years, each member is required to host a meeting and present an educational program.

Local students invited to join children’s orchestra

Winter Gardens Free Children’s Orchestra invites area fourth- through eighth-grade students to join the group. No previous experience is necessary.

Beginners meet from 7:15 to 7:50 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and intermediate players meet from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.
