Steamboat boys shoot down Grand Junction Central
December 21, 2017
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball team welcomed Grand Junction Central to town for their last contest of 2017. Steamboat left a large home crowd very pleased with a 68-54 win.
The Sailors played stingy defense throughout the entire game, holding Central to less than 10 points in each of the first three quarters.
"I was impressed with our defense. We are a defense-first team, and it was great to see it shown tonight," coach Michael Vandahl said. "The last three minutes of the fourth quarter were a little disappointing, but we will work on that."
The beginning of the game looked as though it might be a physical, grinding kind of game and the Sailors led by just two, 11-9, after the first quarter. Steamboat found its shooting touch at the beginning of the second quarter, however, and never looked back.
The team hit twelve 3-point shots overall and no one was burning brighter than Aden Knaus, who hit five 3-pointers and had more than 20 points.
"It was really nice to see that kind of offensive performance by Aden. Tyler Doyne also had 13 points and a handful of assists. It’s great to see different guys step up at this point in the season," Vandahl said. "We have an important transition period coming up, going into conference season, and it was important that we won the game how we did."

The Sailors had three double-digit scorers — Knaus, Doyne and Quinn Connell, who had 11 points.
The boys team will next take the court on Jan. 4 versus Roosevelt.
Thursday's win bumped the team up to a 5-2 record on the season.
“We are in a good spot, but we were in the same spot last year and hit a little bit of a lull," Vandahl said. "We will change a few things and try to make sure that doesn’t happen again this year."
Steamboat girls fall at home
