STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The Steamboat Springs High School boys and girls basketball teams earned a split Tuesday as the Sailors played host to Eagle Valley.

The boys slammed the door on the Devils, limiting their comeback opportunities to win, 87-66. The girls continued to show improvement on their season and lost, 50-29.

The Steamboat boys team came out with a high tempo in the first quarter, led by Mac Riniker and two soaring dunks. The Steamboat boys led 32-12 at the end of the first quarter, but allowed Eagle to shoot their way back into the game. The Eagle boys hit 3-point shots from everywhere, including from just inside the half-court line, and made the game interesting at the half, only trailing by 11.

The Steamboat boys were able to stifle any comeback attempt after the half, as the Eagle boys’ hot shooting hands cooled off. The Devils never got closer than 8 points to the hosts.

Although the Steamboat girls team lost by twenty points, they allowed most of that lead in the first quarter, trailing 22-9 after that first quarter. They played a strong game for the next three quarters.

“We didn’t start the game quite as I would have liked, but I felt like we played great after we settled down.” coach George Ibarra said. “We even won two quarters.”

The Steamboat girls were led by senior Karly Lanning, who had 10 points, but got contributions from a handful of players.

“Our team is really starting to come together. We are starting to communicate a lot more on the court, and off.” Ibarra said, “The support the girls give each other is great, and I think the results are showing that.”

Ibarra said Jaycee May, a sophomore, showed exceptional improvement throughout the game.

“The first quarter, when Eagle was pressing, Jaycee struggled a little bit.” Ibarra said, “but once she saw that she was able to push the ball up court with her own abilities, she really grew into the game and played a quality rest of the game.”

Both Steamboat’s boys and girls will next take the court Friday at home against Battle Mountain. They’ll then turn around the next day to travel to play at Eagle Valley.
