SSWSC snowboard team weathers big storm at slopestyle competition

Ben Ingersoll

— The weekend's heavy snowstorm that dumped on the Rocky Mountains forced the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club snowboard team into expedited training at Breckenridge's slopestyle event Sunday, but a few riders still grabbed podium finishes.

The team traveled to Breckenridge on Saturday and planned to prep for Sunday's competition upon arrival, but the deep snow left the team with only an hour's worth of training leading up to their runs.

In the breaker boys division, Cody Winters paced all SSWSC riders with a third-place finish. Winters was followed by Winston Vaughan's fifth-place finish, Ryan Merritt's eighth-place ride and Ben Larsen in 13th.

In the junior men's class, Skyler Nornes was fourth and Brian Glover finished eighth. Ocoee Wilson was the top finisher in the junior women's class.

"They were able to get through that (training delay)," SSWSC snowboard head coach Tori Koski said. "They showed up and had to adjust to the jumps in an hour. They all did it, and it was awesome. They've never hit those jumps, and they adjusted quickly."

In jam's men, Berin Klawiter grabbed fifth, and in menehune boys, Marty Boyd reached the podium in third followed by Jacy Werner in fifth.

"One of the standouts was Marty Boyd," Koski said. "He was hitting all the big jump lines and spinning on the big jump lines. Cody Winters was back on the podium, and he had a great run."

Spencer Vaughan was Steamboat's lone youth men's class rider, finishing seventh after a mid-run fall. Vaughan now refocuses his attention to the Revolution Tour, where he will make stops to compete in Pennsylvania, Mammoth and Sun Valley. It's the same tour Olympians Taylor and Arielle Gold both competed in.

"It's the next level of competition," Koski said. "He's doing the whole tour this year, too."

The next competition on the USASA Rocky Mountain Series schedule is this weekend's boardercross and skiercross at Copper. Steamboat will host a snowboard-only banked slalom at Howelsen Hill Feb. 15.
